Memories for Grandma
We had the world’s greatest grandma. We wanted to share a few of our
favourite memories. One of the most special things she made was her
baked macaroni and cheese and when she was able her turkey
dinners were always special and never complete without rice potatoes
and red jelly with fruit cocktail in it. Grandma made sure to never
have canned cranberries at a turkey dinner and always made fresh
ones. That was something our mom always remembered fondly about her.
She loved her clothes and shopping. Grandma really enjoyed wearing a
new outfit, bright colours and the latest fashion When visiting
grandma at her house, more recently you would always find her in her
chair, emailing, reading or knitting. But she was always ready to
stop what she was doing and visit whoever came to see her.
Grandma spent many mornings at the co-op having coffee with her
friends and using her free coffee for life card. Grandma had always
had a special place to me, from the time I was a little girl, I
adored her crystal cabinet. I would open the door and take things
out and put them back and always got in trouble from my mother for
possibly breaking one of grandmas nice things. After getting into
trouble a time or two, grandma finally told me to get to work and
dust the crystal and the cabinet if I was to play with it. When my
mother came in a found me I was about to receive a scolding when
grandma stepped in and told her that I was never to get in trouble
again because I was always very careful with it and I meant more to
her than anything in that cabinet.
Every year for our Birthdays my cousin Dena and I would receive
similar gifts but never the exact same, The most memorable was our
porcelain dolls.
Leon was always on call for grandma. His number was written in
block letters beside her bed ready to call anytime of day. She
relied on him and he was always there and close by. Leon was
grandma’s last source of physical strength in this world and our
family is grateful to him to be there for her during her last few
minutes
Evan loved to visit grandma. One topic would blend into another
and grandma would be telling a story about her childhood, her
younger years or any story about our Grandpa Bill. It was easy to
find hours had gone by unnoticed when grandma was telling stories.
Grandma was very excited when I took over her Saskatoon Co-op
number and always encouraged all of us kids to shop at co-op. every
day in high school I went to Grandma’s house on 5th sharp I would
show up and the coffee was always ready. I rarely missed having
coffee with grandma When I left to go to work grandma would say
“work hard deary but not too hard.”
Grandma was always so good to my little family and I. She made
Aaron feel so welcome into our family and once in a while would even
take his side in a discussion. I will never forget the Grey Cup
party in 2009 when she would cheer at the TV during replays like it
was another touchdown.
Presley always called Grandma “Little Grandma” so she wouldn’t
confuse Grandma Patsy with Grandma Massey. The kids and I loved to
go to Grandma’s apartment and have lunch and coffee parties, which
consisted of fighting over her pouter chair and playing with her
little bucket of kids toys. We were so lucky that Grandma did
so well after her fall and breaking her hip, we spent a day together
in the hospital recovering from the arrival of Rhett and her broken
hip.
Grandma was one of my greatest supports and best friends. I was
so lucky to get to spend so much time with Grandma living in
Kindersley, and the last month I got to spend every day with her.
She was always positive and never allowed me to worry. I will miss
my Tuesday and Thursday visits while my kids are in school and
daycare but I will always be thankful for the 27 years I had with my
grandma.
We had 92 wonderful years with our grandma and she was always close
to us in body and in spirit. She was a sweet caring woman who will
be missed by all who knew her
